Peter Berthelesen's Benefits of High Species Diversity

The Berthelsen’s have learned that greater plant diversity yields higher quality wildlife and pollinator habitat. The initial planting of their CRP included 77 different species. Most of these species are local ecotypes and all are native to central Nebraska. There are several ways to locate sources for diverse seed mixes. For example, Pete contacted his local USDA National Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) office for advice. Every year, the list of available native species grows due to increased demand and many of the species can be offered as local ecotype in order to comply with certain USDA conservation program standards.  They found that this strategy can be economical as well.
